Nutrients
You Need To Be Aware Of.
Carbohydrates - chief
source of energy for all body functions and muscular
exertion. Necessary to assist in the digestion and
assimilation of other foods. Provide us with immediate
energy. Can be broken down into simple and complex
carbohydrates (sugars and starches).
Fats - (or lipids) are
the most concentrated source of energy in the diet. When
oxidized, fats furnish more than twice the number of
calories per gram than carbohydrates or proteins. Fats are
important because they act as carriers for fat-soluble
vitamins A, D, E and K. By aiding in the absorption of
vitamin D, fats help make calcium available to body tissues
- such as bones and teeth. Fats also: insulates, protects
organs, and creates a long lasting sensation of fullness.
Protein - Besides water
protein is the most plentiful substance in the body. It is
important for growth and development of all body tissues. It
is the major source of building material for muscles, blood,
skin, hair, nails and internal organs (including the heart
and the brain).
Protein is needed for the formation of hormones controlling
such body functions as - growth,
sexual development, rate of metabolism.
During digestion the large molecules of proteins are broken
down into
Amino Acids.
The body requires approx. 22 amino acids. All but 8 are
produced in the body. They must be supplied in the diet.
To determine protein requirement - divide your body weight
by 2 and that is the number of grams of protein you require
for the day (.42 gram/lb. of body weight).
Other nutrients include: Vitamins, Minerals and Water.
